ELI RIVERA & RUBEN GAONA
Co-Founders, The Way Out
The Way Out co-founders, Eli Rivera and Ruben Gaona met In the Fall of 2019 after an anti-recidivism panel discussion hosted by American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact and gBETA Social Impact. They were drawn to the event because the topic was extremely near and dear to their hearts… like the panelist on stage, both had experienced being incarcerated and the subsequent challenges of finding a job as a Person of Color with a felony conviction. Shortly after the 2019 event, Ruben and Eli decided to follow their dream of creating a comprehensive anti-bias employment platform that would align employers with qualified justice impacted job seekers in their industry, while also providing additional services and technologies to help them integrate into their new roles successfully. They understood that not only do justice impacted job seekers need jobs, but they also need a strong support network at their side. They recognized how challenging it can be for reentry service providers to meet the full breadth of this populations' needs and wanted to help.
In the Summer of 2020, they began their justice tech journey when they were accepted into gener8tor’s inaugural gALPHA Social Impact Program, where they began working on their platform. In October of that year they entered the gBETA Social Impact Pre-accelerator and by the end of 2020 launched their anti-bias employment platform. In the Spring of 2021, they launched the My Way Out mobile support app and by the end of 2021 they matched 56 justice-impacted individuals with over 180 supportive services. Of the 27 individuals utilizing My Way Out for employment purposes, 25 are still employed.
The Way Out has recently partnered with Nadiyah Johnson and Milky Way Tech Hub to launch Bridging the Tech Gap for Returning Citizens (BTGRC). BTGRC is designed to welcome back to our community recently released (or soon to be released) justice impacted individuals in Milwaukee and help them navigate today's technology ecosystem.
With the ongoing support of American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact and the MacArthur Foundation, Eli and Ruben expect to serve between 200-300 justice-impacted individuals this year, triple their 2021 direct-hire revenue and raise funds to launch their new platform nationally.
